The Green Comet.

by

The TaleWagger

When The First Galaxy was virtually complete, only a mishmash of Evil Spirits remained, unused and unwanted. Light of Day gathered them up. The Maker rolled them into a ball to form a comet, dipped it in green light and threw it towards The Vastness of Nowhere.

As the day was ending, Twilight, mother of Night, was busily spreading Peace and Tranquility about the skies. Suddenly, low on the horizon, she caught sight of the green comet about to leave the galaxy. Fearing for its safety she called out to Darkness, father of Night, for help.

Darkness quickly descended, but he too was unaware that The First Galaxy was complete and that the green comet was not wanted. Being colour-blind he thought that it was the same as the other comets that were beginning to appear among the planets. He grabbed at it.

Disaster!

Part of The Green Comet shattered in his mighty grip, and all too soon the newly-born Night was covered in Evil Spirits. Darkness, realising his mistake, sought help from the Lunar Wind to blow the Evils away but it was too weak. Some of them, such as Nightmares and Suspicion, quickly hid in Darkness while others such as Deceit and Jealousy were blown about the planets and later thrived in the Light of Day.

And so it was, that The First Galaxy, made from Dreams of Perfection, became less than perfect!!

When The First Galaxy was very young, Zeus, God of all Gods, fathered the first identical twins. They were boys and he named them Perseus and Persen.

At that time there were very few Gods, but many tasks to be done to make the planets fit for habitation by The Mortals. When the twins became teenagers, they were separated from each other and sent to the Land of Tutors to prepare them for Immortality. Perseus's apprenticeship involved travelling the eight Kurves of the Galaxy, seeking out the Virtues of Honesty and Integrity and adapting them for the Heart of the Mortals.

Persen, meanwhile, was sent to Planet Mythicaa to learn about the Logix of Ingenuity and Invention and how to harness them within the Brain.

One day as Persen sat at study with his Tutor, the sky slowly changed from its usual clear blue to a hazy fluorescent green.

"Master, what is happening?" he asked, as his skin tingled in fear and wonderment.

"Quickly Persen!" exclaimed the Tutor. "We must hide deep within our cave. The Green Comet of Saeton is coming."

"Shield your eyes!" he added as they ran to safety. "And promise me you will never look at it. For if you do you will become unfit to carry out The Labours and you will never become a God."

For the rest of the day, Persen and the Tutor stayed deep within the protective gloom of their cave and discussed the strange comet and its power to taint with evil the minds of those who were lured by its spell.

During the night Persen awoke and wandered towards the mouth of the cave for some fresh air. As he wiped the sleep from his eyes he realised that the sky was still green. He had fallen asleep puzzling over the powers of the evil comet expecting it to be gone when he awoke, but sky was still green. As he looked out of the cave he could see that the sinister green glow now bathed the land.

Persen could not contain his curiosity any longer and strode outside, shielding his eyes from the comet with his left hand. He felt no sense of fear. The leaves of the trees were green ... as they had always been. The grass was green ... as it had always been. Only the sky, which should have been dark, was different!

The green light had almost turned night into day and he was lulled into a false sense of security. He even felt secure enough to wash his hands and face before returning to the cave and strolled to a nearby pond. Carefully he kept his back to the comet and only looked into the water that was in his shadow. It did not reflect the comet.

Carefully he washed his hands and then held up his left hand to prevent himself looking at the reflection in the pond. With the right hand he scooped up some water to wash his face but, as he brought it close to his face, he saw the reflection of the comet in the palm of his hand.

Persen was captivated by its shimmering beauty and trapped forever!

Or was he?

He had only stared at a reflection, a very small reflection. H he had not stared directly at the comet.

"Surely a reflection counts for nothing," he mused. "I feel no different, therefore I am no different. I have not been affected."

Persen returned to the cave and soon fell asleep. Next day when he arose, the sky was blue again and everything seemed normal. The comet had gone and he decided not to tell the Tutor of his experience.

He had been infected by the Evil Spirit of Deceit!

Perseus completed his apprenticeship and became an immortal God. His twin brother, because The Gods were aware of the truth about that fateful night, slowly drifted into obscurity becoming a very ordinary Persen.

Because of this, The Heart has the pure Virtues of Honesty and Integrity, while within The Brain, Ingenuity and Invention are often mis-used by the Evil Spirit of Deceit.
